6 easy ways to conquer your nerves

Hello everybody,

Today I want to try and focus on a common problem that a lot of us face when riding – nerves. I have been riding for 13 years and I am still a very nervous rider. A lot of people could watch me ride and think I was really confident however my riding friends that know me, know this is a different story.   It is something I find particularly difficult to overcome and frustrating. In my own experience here are just a few easy things you can do to help tackle your anxiety:

1.  Learn to trust your horse. I often have a bad habit of not having faith in my horse. I have owned my mare for 5 years and she has never once let me down or caused me any harm. Quite frequently, my fears overpower me and I forget to have faith in my horse and trust that I know she will look after me.

2. Don’t beat yourself up. It can be really easy to get downbeat about your nerves. I know I have often felt this way and it was because I felt I was holding myself back and letting myself down. If you even manage to saddle up and mount, well done to you. Horse riding is a demanding sport and often we forget that.

3. Remember you are a bad ass. You could have chosen any other sport but you chose to ride 650kg animal that could kill you at any moment just for fun. You go girl.

4. Find a good instructor to help you. I am blessed to have found my instructor who is now my friend and I purchased my horse from. She knows exactly how to help me through my anxiety and knows how far to push me and my horse. My instructor has helped me to accomplish things I never thought I would be able to do. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.

5. Take small steps in order to achieve your goals. If you have to go back to basics to get your confidence up – do it. If you want to become more confident when jumping, start with polework and build it up from there. Remember why you started. It can also be good to take a step and remind yourself why you started horse riding in the first place and to rekindle your passion. Horse riding isn’t all about pushing yourself – remember to have fun! Even if that is just walking your horse. If you really want to achieve something – you will find a way to do it.
